Dear Sir,

In reply to your esteemed letter of yesterday, asking my views as to the desirability of the establishment of a currency upon

a gold basis in this Colony, ♬ beg leave to say, that this would be

quite contrary to my views, in as much as trade, and J vanture to

say trade of every desoription, would greatly suffer and gradually

go into other channels, 1.0. to our neighbouring ports and of course

to their advantage, but very much to the detriment of this Colony.

Hongkong has no Exporta or let us may very little - and

we have in this respects to do our trade with China & Silver coun-

try in close proximity - and as long as this country adheres to Sil-

ver J really do not sea how the Colony can go over to a Gold curren-

the latter may be beneficial individually, but it will certain-

ly do much harm to this Colony, which in my humble opinion would feel

the consequences vary soon.

A stable aurrency might induce Capitalists at Home to in-

vest money hore - this may be grue, but it will hardly be an equiva-

lent, and I do not see, taking everything into consideration, how

the Colony can profit by it.-

Sir John Keane Bart.
